Jean Ekman Adams's Clarence Goes Out West and Meets a Purple Horse ($15.95),and Clarence and the Great Surprise ($15.95) award-winning picture books for ages 3 and up. Sophie's favorite literary heroine has always been the Empress of Blandings, P. G. Wodehouse's darkly gorgeous winner of the Fat Pig class at the Shropshire Agricultural show. She was enchanted to discover that Penguin has reprinted five novels in the Blandings Castle series, including the final chronicle Sunset at Blandings ($8.00). For pig aficionados everywhere, there is a previously unpublished photo of the real-life pig that inspired Wodehouse to create the Empress.
